Romell "Mel" Leo Fisher, longtime resident of Green Bay, passed away peacefully Sunday, October 27, 2024 at the age of 89. He was born July 8, 1935, in Antigo on the family farm. Mel was the youngest son of the late John and Pauline (Schmutzer) Fischer.
After graduation from Antigo High School, at the age of 17, Mel continued working at the local shoe factory. Eventually, he moved to Milwaukee where he landed a job at the newspaper company largely due to his interest in journalism and his exceptional typing skills. Shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the US Army and proudly served his country in Virginia, stateside, until his honorable discharge. Thereafter, he returned to Green Bay and secured a job at the Green Bay Press Gazette where he worked as the dispatch department manager for 36 years. He was aptly described as a "hard-working, dedicated employee...who earned the respect of employees because he cared about them." The truth is, Mel cared about everyone deeply, most importantly his loved ones. On November 3, 1962, Mel married the love his life, Jacqueline "Jackie" Farah whom he met singing in the choir at St. John's Church. They spent nearly 64 years together, devoted as husband and wife, and were blessed with 2 children, Maria and Joseph.
In retirement, Mel dedicated his life to taking care of his yard, gardens, and beloved pets, his family and the upbringing of his grandson, Cayden. He enjoyed spending time on his computer, watching the stock market, singing in church choirs, and going to the casino whenever he had the chance to sneak away. Having hit the jackpot once before, he always held out hope to do so again. The truth is his family hit the jackpot with Mel as the quarterback. He cherished time reminiscing about his experiences in the Army and telling stories about other adventures. Simply put, he was a genuinely kind, compassionate, and incredibly wise man of steadfast and unwavering faith. You could count on him to be fair, considerate, interested in other perspectives and willing, then, to give you his unbiased feedback.
Mel will be sadly missed by his wife, Jackie; 2 children, Maria (Chad) Lasecki, Joseph (Peggy) Fisher; 2 grandchildren, Cayden (significant other, Maykayla) Lasecki, Morgan (Dylan) Brault; 2 great-grandchildren, Benjamin Brault, Maya Brault; a Godson, John Smits; sisters-in-law, Angeline Fischer and Diane Farah; along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mel was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Fischer; sister and brother-in-law, LaNah (Richard) Wu; mother-in-law, Julia Farah; brother-in-law, Edward Farah; sisters and brothers-in-law, Patricia (Robert) Smits and Mary (Henry) Ziolkowski.
Per Mel's wishes, a private Catholic Mass was held. Entombment will be in Allouez Catholic Mausoleum. To send online condolences, please go to www.BlaneyFuneralHome.com.
The family extends their sincere appreciation to the nurses and caregivers at St. Mary's Hospital for their care and compassion given to Mel and his family throughout his illness.
Mel lived by and set the example for what 1 Corinthains 13:4-13 sets forth:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
