Roger R. Gryboski, 89, Green Bay, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2025. He was born June 10, 1936, to Ted and Alice Gryboski. Roger was the oldest of five children and grew up on Green Bay's west side. He learned the value of hard work and his carpentry skills from his father, Ted, who was also a builder.
After attending St. Joseph Elementary and Junior High, Roger attended West High where he played halfback for the football team and graduated in 1955. During his sophomore year of high school, his father became ill and Roger completed two homes that were under construction, working after school and on weekends, to help support his family. After high school Roger went to work as the lead carpenter for Al Noel. Al was a great mentor to Roger.
His love of adventure and working with his hands led Roger to build a boat in his parents' garage when he was 18. He then got his pilot's license and bought an airplane, which he flew out of Nicolet Airport. As the story goes, he sold his plane at age 22 in order to buy an engagement ring.
In 1958 Roger was drafted into the US Army and joined the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell Kentucky until 1961. He told many colorful stories of his time in the Army.
On April 25, 1959, Roger married the love of his life, Catherine Stoik, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Green Bay. They shared 59 wonderful years together raising their four children and building their business. Together, in 1964, while raising 3 children aged 3 and under, and a fourth on the way, they founded Roger R. Gryboski Quality Home Builder and operated the business until retirement in 1996. They built a reputation as a high-quality builder and built hundreds of homes throughout Brown County. They also developed several subdivisions and were active in commercial real estate development and investment until their retirement.
Roger was an active member of the Brown County Home Builders Association (BCHBA) of which he was a former president. Throughout his career, Roger was a mentor to many in the trades and enjoyed lasting relationships with his employees, subcontractors and customers.
Roger was a charter member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and led a faith filled life, active in the parish until his passing. He led a Christian life with humility and compassion, sharing his time and treasure generously. Friends and family describe Roger as loyal, sincere, charitable, and selfless. Most of all he never complained and was always happy.
His favorite title was "Grandpa". He loved spending time with family and spoiling each of his six grandchildren. Roger taught all of the grandkids to snow ski and loved to share his love of the outdoors with his family.
Retirement was a race to see how many adventures they could fit in. His passions were many. He loved being from Green Bay, the Packers, boating on High Falls Flowage in Crivitz, and later on the great lakes and the intercoastal near Port Charlotte Fl., golfing, hunting, fishing and anything with his family. He especially enjoyed golfing with "his favorite son-in-law, Pat" in his final years. Legend has it that Pat could never beat him and always had to buy lunch. Apparently Pat never learned that "you drive for show but putt for dough".
Roger was friend to many and will be remembered as a successful family and businessman who led a full and happy life.
Roger is survived by his children: Debbie, Green Bay; Mary (Patrick) Hermsen, Green Bay; Steve (Lynne) Gryboski, De Pere; and Bob (Stacy) Gryboski, De Pere; six grandchildren: Bryan Hermsen (Ryan Sowa), Erinn Hermsen (fiancé Mike McNicol), Cora (Eric) Curtis, Vincent (Michael Jarzin), Jacob and Alex Gryboski; and great-grandsons, Hudson and Harvey and a great-granddaughter on the way.
He is further survived by brother Tom Gryboski, and sisters Lois (Mike) Lops, and Linda (John) Mann; several nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; his parents, Ted and Alice; a brother, Charles Gryboski; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Gryboski.
Visitation will be at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2771 Oakwood Dr., from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16. The Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 at the church. Entombment will be in the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. They also are grateful for the support and guidance from the staff of Moments Hospice and Dr. Connor Roberts.
