Obituary

Listen to Obituary

I am a native Wisconsinite - born in Portage on September 27, 1939, to Robert and Kathleen Schulze. If you are reading this, I passed away on December 9, 2024.

My dad was with the phone company as I was growing up, so we were transferred from Edgerton to Madison and then Plymouth. My four years of high school were spent at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary. Three summer vacations were highlighted by 3 summer romances. (Celibacy was not for me, but that time studying for the priesthood was very meaningful.)

My wife, Mary Lou, took on a lot more than she bargained for when she took my last name on October 18, 1958. She persevered as my love, partner, best friend, and mother to two boys for 58 wonderful years before passing away on November 10, 2016. Our sons, Bob and Patrick, grew up to be truly fine human beings and brought me great joy with their continuing affection for their dad.

My broadcast career began in 1957 in my hometown of Plymouth at WPL Y radio. After stops in Manitowoc (WOMT) and Neenah-Menasha (WNAM), I moved into Green Bay television in February of 1962. After a year as sports director at WLUK, I spent the next six (1963-1969) in the same role at WFRV. Following a two-year sabbatical trying to start a fast-food chain with former Packers Bob Long and Jim Grabowski, I returned to WLUK as sports director/news anchor from 1971-1983.

The TV highlights, of course, were covering the Packers during the GLORY YEARS. The period included the Ice Bowl, the first two Super Bowls and interesting relationships with both players and coaches. My dealings with Vince Lombardi were the most memorable.

Along the way, I did play-by-play for Packer pre-season football, the WIAA state basketball tournament, a Wisconsin Badger Bowl game in 1981, I also co-hosted and/or produced THE BART STARR SHOW and THE MONDAY NIGHT QUARTERBACK with Fuzzy Thurston and Jim Carter. There were also opportunities to host telethons for Rawhide Boys Ranch, Children's Hospital and Jerry Lewis' MDA.

After leaving the TV business for good in 1983, I helped start up two telecom companies. A dozen years at long distance company Schneider Communications, followed by a move into the burgeoning cell phone industry.

Since retirement at age 60, I served for 20+ meaningful years as a volunteer with Unity Hospice and on several boards including the Packers' Hall of Fame as an Emeritus Director.

I am survived by my sons Bob (Lisa) and Patrick, six grandchildren (Kasey, Kevin (Kaitlyn), Megan, Matthew, Sara and Sydney), and four great-grandchildren (Oliver, Molly, Peyton and Kinsley). Also left behind are my three younger sisters (Mary (Morrie), Joanne and Theresa) who till the day I died always called me "Bobby." Preceding me in death in addition to my wife were my parents and my in-laws, Norman and Celestine Meyer.

Very important to me are special friends. Among others, they include Tammy & Jerry, Hutch, and Jerry & Janice.

Friends and family will gather at Resurrection Catholic Church, 333 Hilltop Dr., from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 4; Mass to follow at 11 a.m. To send online condolences, please go to www.BlaneyFuneralHome.com.
