The Last Watch for Robert John Langan, 69, a Green Bay, Wis., resident and former resident of Yonkers, N.Y., occurred when he died at home on Thursday morning, Aug. 27, 2009, after an unexpected and rapid encounter with Cruetzfeldt-Jacob Disease. The son of the late Maurice Langan and Roserita (Burns) Johnson, and stepson of Arthur Johnson, was born on July 10, 1940, in Yonkers, N.Y. Bob was a graduate of Charles E. Gorton High School (Yonkers, N.Y.) in 1958; earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Police Science from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in 1974; graduated from the FBI National Academy 101st Session in 1985; and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1991.
On Feb. 8, 1964, Bob married the love of his life, Nan Lee Aerts, at St. Boniface Church in De Pere, Wis. He began his law enforcement career as a patrolman on the Westchester County Police Force, Irvington, N.Y. in 1963. In January of 1966, he began his service as a patrolman with the Green Bay Police Department, retiring after 29 years of service as the Chief of Police in May of 1995. Bob loved his career serving and protecting the citizens of Green Bay. Post retirement, he established his private investigative business, Langan Investigations Inc., providing honest and fair investigations for those in need of help. During this time, he also worked for the National Football League Security Department as the Alternate Security Representative for the Green Bay Packers. Bob loved Green Bay and was active in many community activities including: Alzheimer's Association of Northeast Wisconsin, Family Service Association of Brown County, Brown County Commission on Aging, United Way, American Heart Association, Green Bay Sexual Assault Center, Brown County Family Violence Center, and the Golden House. He was a longtime member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Among Bob's passions were spending time with his family and friends, driving his Mustang, relaxing at his cottage in Egg Harbor, traveling, and sailing the waters of Green Bay, Lake Michigan and the Caribbean.
Survivors include his wife, Nan Lee, Green Bay; son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Kimberly Langan, De Pere; daughter and son-in-law, Molly and Nick Evgenides, Green Bay; one grandson, Dyno Evgenides, Green Bay; brother and sister-in-law, Rich and Sally Langan, Green Bay; sister-in-law, Cindy Aerts, Bradenton, Fla.; sister-in-law, Emily Langan, Peekskill, N.Y.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clark and Meg Steinhardt, Green Bay; uncle and aunt, Chuck and Judy Kazilek, Glen Allen, Va.; nieces and nephews, Mary Langan and her son, Chris Krajca, Ossining, N.Y.; Rick Steinhardt, Two Rivers; Rich, Laura, Richie Jr. and Nikole Langan, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Sara, John and Abigayle Chapman, Egan, Minn.; Matthew Langan, Green Bay; cousin, Rose Petersons, Hillsdale, N.Y.; close cousins, Chuck and Linda Lawrence, Galesville, Md.; and his dear friends, Mary Kay Washienko, Patty Washienko, Sue Caples, Kathy Washienko, Mike Mathieu and his daughters Erin and Megan; Royce Finne and Sue Bischel.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Roserita Johnson; father, Maurice Langan; stepfather, Arthur Johnson; brother, Brian Langan; father and mother-in-law, John and Winon Aerts; sister-in-law, Katie Steinhardt; and his dear friend, Thomas Washienko.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., Green Bay from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Visitation will also be held at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1420 Division St., Green Bay, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday. The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating Bob's life and resurrection, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Timothy Brandt officiating.
