Richard lived in Milwaukee, WI as a boy, before his family moved to Green Bay when he was age seven. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Green Bay in 1952, then attended St. Norbert College in De Pere, before joining the U.S. Army, where he served as a tank driver.

After his discharge from the Army, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a bachelor's degree in business, before beginning a career in sales with Miehle-Goss-Dexter. He lived in several different cities while in that role, before settling in the Chicago area. He became Director of Marketing for M-G-D and earned an MBA from the University of Chicago.

In 1975, he and his family returned to Green Bay, where he and his wife, Joan, along with his in-laws, Brian and Judy Peiffer, owned two True Value hardware stores. In 1983, he began working with the University of Wisconsin Extension, as a small business agent, and retired from UWEX as a professor.

Richard was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers and was a Packers season ticket holder. He enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, playing cards, reading, and spending time with his family and many friends.

Richard is survived by his wife, Joan (nee Townsend) Mistele; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Mistele and Christiane (nee DeMent) Mistele, of Brookfield, IL; daughter, Kathleen Mistele of Green Bay, WI; granddaughter, Chloe Mistele of Green Bay, WI; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
