Reverend Gary Joseph Dantinne was called by God to eternal life on May 26, 2024 at the age of 82 at Emerald Bay Retirement Center, Hobart, WI.
Fr. Dantinne was born in Green Bay, WI on June 25, 1941, the second of two children of Chester and Irene (Boehm) Dantinne. He grew up in the Green Bay area (Town of Preble) as did his parents and their parents. Fr. Dantinne's ancestors settled in eastern Brown County (Sugar Bush, Humboldt, and Bellevue) in the mid 1850's. Fr. Dantinne graduated from Premontre Catholic High School in 1959 and St. Norbert College in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. He continued his theological studies at St. Francis Major Seminary in Milwaukee, WI and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Green Bay on May 25, 1968, by Bishop Aloysius Wycislo at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral.
Fr. Dantinne's first priestly appointment was as Associate of the Associated Diocesan Societies and then as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Marinette, St. Patrick Parish, Green Bay, St. Mary Parish, Menasha, and St. Margaret Mary Parish, Neenah. Fr. Dantinne was appointed Pastor of St. Mary Parish, Greenville in 1975, and then Pastor of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Kaukauna in 1979. He was assigned Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Shawano in 1984, and Pastor of St. Kilian Parish, New Franken in 1989. Fr. Dantinne was appointed Pastor of St. Benedict Parish, Suamico and St. Pius Parish, Little Suamico in 1991. Fr. Dantinne was granted permission for a Sabbatical in 1982 and spent four months in Rome. He received permission for a Sabbatical in 2001 and spent four months at the Biblical Theological Institute at Tantur, between Jerusalem and Bethlehem in Israel. Fr. Dantinne served on the Presbyteral Council of the Diocese of Green Bay from 1992-1999.
Due to a staph infection of the brain requiring surgery in 2010, Fr. Dantinne was placed on medical disability and retired from active ministry in 2011.
Prior to his surgery Fr. Dantinne traveled extensively. He enjoyed his visits to San Diego, Pheonix, and San Antonio. He enjoyed downhill skiing, biking, and riding motorcycles. Christmas was his favorite season and he spent many hours decorating and collecting pieces for his Department 56 village. Over the years his canine companions were his best friends including his childhood dog, Taffy and most recently, Elle and Baele. Fr. Dantinne also enjoyed family genealogy.
Fr. Dantinne, survived by no close relatives, contributed greatly to the writing of this obituary. He is survived by distant relatives and a few very close friends who have been helpful since becoming disabled and in his retirement; especially John and Carolyn Whitehouse, Mark and Laura Hollister, Don and Rose Warden, Reverend John Bergstadt, and Reverend Patrick Beno, and he thanks them for all their help over the last years.
Fr. Dantinne was preceded in death by his parents Chester (1966), and Irene (1979) and sister Donna (2011).
He was preceded in death by his canine best friends Taffy, Elle, and Baele.
Reception of the body will take place on Sunday, June 2 at 5:30pm at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral 140 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay. Visitation will continue until 6:30pm, at which time there will be a Vigil Service. Visitation will resume at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral on Monday, June 3 at 9:00am until the 10:00am Mass of Christian Burial with Most Rev. David Ricken as Celebrant and Fr. Tom Long as Homilist.
