Marjorie Joanne Roberts, 90, Green Bay, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020. She was born in River Grove, Cook County, Illinois, on July 22, 1929, to Theodore Edward Weichinger and Blanche Wethy -Mintz.
Biographical information
Mom grew up as a product of WWII, and grew up very fast, as I look through hundreds and hundreds of old photos of her when she was 12 she looked like she was already 25 – Her two older brothers had already joined the Navy and were bringing their roommates back home to visit – Grandma and Grandpa Weichinger had extra room upstairs and in the basement that they rented out to servicemen so Mom got to meet and hang around a lot of "great" guys when she was a young teenager.
Her parents decided to move to California – thinking it might be nice to give Mom a break from all these soldiers she was meeting near home – but they didn't realize there were a lot more soldiers stationed near San Diego. Mom fell in love with a soldier 10 years older than her and they took off to Ohio and got married, without her parent's permission and a little more than a year later they started having a family.
While growing up she was a Tomboy – Grandma and Grandpa owned an empty lot next to their home in River Grove that was like a mini jungle – with huge vines and such. Mom said she would always be climbing the tree branches and swinging on the vines.
There are a lot of interesting things about Mom's family – one is that her Grandmother, Harriet Amelia Spencer turns out to be a direct relative to Winston Churchill's mother and to Princess Diana Spencer – the mother of the future King of England. She has lots of other neat ancestors too.
After Mom got married in Glouster, Ohio, where Dad was born, they moved to Cleveland, Ohio where their first two sons (Ken and Dan) were born. Then the family moved to River Grove, Illinois where all four lived with Grandma and Grandpa, until Dad decided it was time to buy his own property and move 17 miles away to a place called Wood Dale where he pretty much built our house himself. Grandpa Weichinger was a finish carpenter and I remember he and Dad arguing about how something should be done – and Dad would "do it his way and Grandpa would go away in a huff. Mom would end up doing nearly all of the painting – inside and outside – still have plenty of pictures of her on ladders with paintbrush in her hand.
Don't know how we got permit to occupy the house but we moved in without any doors on the bathrooms – no doors on the bedrooms, (really the only doors in the house were the front entry door and the back exit door.) We had linoleum in all rooms on main floor and just floor boards on second floor – for many years. But at least we had indoor plumbing – a luxury that hardly any of dad's family back in Ohio had until the mid 70's if then.
Mom loved having her own house – we had all sorts of animals – kind of like a small farm – even had a couple of Shetland ponies – not at the same time. Don got his picture in the paper delivering newspapers while riding the Shetland pony.
Diane remembers "all the animals" we had, from ducks and chickens, to rabbits and Shetland ponies. And of course, many dogs and cats over the years. Most were outside but some came inside the house.
Diane also remembered Mother used to make her clothes a lot. Guess dresses were an easy pattern since that's what she made; and she would make them for cousin, Sheryl as well so they looked like twins.
She baked all the time and all the neighbor kids knew where the cookies were. Mom loved to take care of the neighborhood kids. The door was always unlocked. I'm not sure there was even a key to lock it for years.
She loved company and welcomed everyone, be it the mail man, milk man or the insurance guy. She always had a pot of coffee ready for them. And of course, Mrs. Baker and her were best friends for years. All of us kids would have to be careful about being dressed in the morning because when we came into the kitchen you would never know who of Mom's or Dad's friends would be sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee waiting for one of them to wake up – again none of the doors were ever locked at least until the 1970's.
Mom made sure we stayed in one place so we could all go to the same school without having to move from friends as she had done in her childhood. She told me once that she made father promise we would stay close to her parents and that all of us kids would be able to live in one place til out of school.
