Lloyd was Licensed in Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Tennessee, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Missouri. He worked with his father at R. W. Surplice Architects and Foth and Vandyke Engineering Consultants, with Dave VanLannen at Bay Architects. In 2009, he founded Lloyd J. Carpenter Architects LLC, where he continued to serve his valued clients with integrity and expertise until his death. Lloyd took great pride in his work and was grateful for every opportunity.
We want to thank the many clients who sought out Lloyd's expertise and ethics, and especially the many repeat Builders and Developers who worked with Lloyd on a regular basis.
Lloyd was a mariner at heart. He was a long-time member of the Green Bay Yachting Club and served as Commodore in 1990 and 1991. Boating was not just a hobby; it was a way of life. On his boats, Mariner, Miss Fit, Melody, Coup de Ville, Recalcitrant, and On Top he cruised with friends, on the bay of Green Bay, crossing Lake Michigan to the ports on the West Coast of Michigan, and the North Channel. Lloyd never rushed a boating adventure. To him, boating was about the journey, not the destination.
In October 2004, Lloyd and friends embarked on one of the top cruises of a boater's life, "The Great Loop". A trip from Green Bay, down Lake Michigan, down the Chicago Sanitary Canal, down the Illinois River, to the Mississippi River, to the Ohio River, then up to Paducah, Ohio, and into the TVA Waterway, then to the Tombigbee Waterway, exiting in Mobile Bay. They crossed the Gulf of Mexico to Tarpon Springs, FL. and then down the Florida West Coast.
They left the 45' Carver "SHANKS A LOT" in Key Largo, Fl for the winter. In August 2005 they picked up the boat in Key Largo and went up the East coast of Florida, up the East Coast of the US, through the New York Barge Canal System into Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and back to Green Bay. This was a minimum 5,250-mile trip that took 28 days in 2004, 38 days in 2005 to get back to Green Bay, and used more fuel and paid more marina costs than we want to know.
After being the mariner in charge for this trip, Lloyd passed the required exams and became a Licensed US Coast Guard Captain. This is a trip taken and experience shared by very few boat enthusiasts.
Lloyd was a loyal friend to many, though it is well known that he could not keep a secret. As the joke went: "Telephone, Telegraph, Tell Lloyd". His voice and laughter could fill a room and conversation was never lacking, though almost always about the same three topics: boating, how to draw a home, or how all of life can be broken down and explained by geometry or rhythm. He enthusiastically referred to this as "the ABCs of life".
A Celebration of Life will be at the Green Bay Yacht Club, 100 Bay Beach Rd., on Saturday, June 14 starting at 2 p.m. To send online condolences, please go to www.BlaneyFuneralHome.com.
We will greatly miss you, Lloyd. Your talent, sense of humor, and echoing laugh will stay with us forever. May your next journey be just as grand as the ones you took here with us.
