John Robert Maloney, 92, Green Bay, passed away Friday, July 7, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. He was born in Marinette on May 19, 1931, to Finnan D. and Hester M. (Carviou) Maloney.
John graduated from Marinette High School, Class of 1949. He joined the U.S. Army, served for three years, and was stationed in France. While on a 3-day leave, John attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. After serving his country, he attended Badger Green Bay Business College. John married the love of his life, Jeanne Lois Malmstadt, in a double wedding ceremony on June 11, 1955, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Marinette. He worked for Wisconsin Public Service for 38 years and retired in 1993 as a Commercial Marketing Representative. John was proud of his time there and grateful for the many friends he met.
His Catholic faith was important to him, and in the mid-1970s he began studying to serve as a deacon. In 1978, John was ordained as a deacon by Bishop Wycislo at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. He served as deacon at his home parish, Annunciation, where he had previously served on the parish council, school board, and was instrumental in organizing the parish picnic and other fundraising events. John and Jeanne moved to Suamico in 1982 and John continued his work as a deacon at St. Benedict Church until he retired in 2006. His family was blessed to have him preside over our many baptisms, weddings, and funerals. He also provided pastoral care as a chaplain at St. Mary's and Bellin Hospitals. He was active with the Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul Society. He and Jeanne were longtime volunteers at the St. Vincent de Paul store.
John was a devoted husband and father and provided unconditional love to his entire family. John and Jeanne loved living on the Suamico River, and their children and grandchildren have idyllic memories of swimming, boating, fishing, ice skating, and frog hunting. They also treasured having family and friends over for meals and enjoying the beautiful sunset views from their deck.
He is survived by six children: Tim (Gloria Vazquez) Maloney, Jane Scholz, Brian (Karen) Maloney, David (Pam) Maloney, Barb (Chris) Cooper, Cheri (Steve) Salmon; 20 grandchildren: Sean, Dylan, Carlos, Finn, Niko, Bramm, Codie, Brock, Eric, Mike, Janelle, Brittainy, Danielle, Rachael, Rachel, Shaina, Kaitlyn, Jared, Seth and Ava; 13 great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law Eleanor Maloney and many nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne, after 65 years of marriage; his parents, Finnan and Hester; parents-in-law, Frank and Julia Malmstadt; siblings, Joyce Shepro, Gladys Peters, Doris Michalski, Joseph "Earl" Maloney, Larry Maloney, Tom Maloney, Mary Gaspar, Francis "Chick" Maloney, and Shirley Keller.
Friends and family will gather at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 130 St. Matthew Street, Allouez, on Saturday, July 15, from 9 to 11 a.m.; Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. Since Jeanne passed during the pandemic and had a restricted funeral, the family encourages Jeanne's friends to join in celebration of both of their lives. Burial will be in St. Benedict Cemetery. To send online condolences, please go to www.BlaneyFuneralHome.com.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to benefit Foster the Village www.fosterthevillage.org.
