John E. Berggren, age 87, of Green Bay, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, following a short but courageous battle with cancer.

John was born on January 13, 1939. He was one of seven children raised on a dairy farm in Menominee, Michigan, graduating from Menominee High School with the class of 1957.

From 1962 to 1964, John proudly served his country in the United States Army. During his military service, he was stationed in Libya, while attached to the Core of Engineers as a Topographic Surveyor. After the service and while attending college, he worked for the US Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, measuring stream flow in the U.P. rivers. John Graduated from Michigan Technological University with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1968. He immediately began a long, fulfilling career with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. John truly loved his work, dedicating 32 years to improving state infrastructure before retiring in 2000 as the maintenance supervisor for Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan counties.

John was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons for over 66 years. He was a member and Past Master of the Des Peres Lodge #85 in Green Bay for the last several decades, serving as secretary and in many other roles.

While John took great pride in his professional achievements and fraternal engagements, his most important and cherished roles were those of husband, father, and grandfather. On May 8, 1971, he married the love of his life, Carol (Giesler) Berggren, at the Green Bay East Moravian Church. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with deep devotion and a healthy sense of humor, for over 55 years.

They raised one daughter, Teri, who was a source of pride and joy. Later in life, John found immense happiness in his role as a grandfather. His two granddaughters, Arry and June Vanlieshout of Sturgeon Bay brought him endless delight, and he cherished every moment spent watching them grow.

John's memory will be forever kept alive by his family: his loving wife, Carol Berggren; his daughter, Teri (Josh) Vanlieshout of Sturgeon Bay; his cherished granddaughters, Arry and June Vanlieshout; sister-in-law Janet (Rich) Erickson; brother Frank (Sally) Berggren, and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Royal and Wilhelmina (Rudjinsky) Berggren; brothers, Richard, Laurence, and Carl Berggren; and sisters, Kathy Wheaton and Alice Green. John will be remembered as a dedicated civil servant, a proud veteran, and above all, a deeply loving family man.
