James R. Hall, 96 of Green Bay passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Grancare Gardens Assisted Living Facility on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. Jim was born in Milwaukee on October 26, 1927 to the late Robert and Ellen (Frisque) Hall. He graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1945 and enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed as a sergeant in Guam during WWII working with communications. After his discharge on May 6, 1947 he attended UW Madison where he received his degree in Civil Engineering.
Jim was employed over 40 years as an engineer for Larsen Canning Company which later became Dean Foods. He was instrumental in designing many of the buildings used for canning Freshlike vegetables and he enjoyed showing his children the trucks loaded with corn and peas at harvest time. Jim was always a thorough, exacting and honest hard worker. In addition to his engineering career, he worked with his father assisting with surveying many of the lots and subdivisions in Brown County and the surrounding areas. Jim had an excellent mechanical mind and could fix almost anything. He operated a small business repairing transits and levels for area contractors and surveyors which he continued doing well into his 90's. He enjoyed following the Green Bay Packers and was an usher at the Packer games for over 20 years.
Jim had a passion for the outdoors and nature and enjoyed sharing this with his children. He particularly loved to fish and treasured the yearly family vacation time spent at his Uncle's cottage at Spread Eagle fishing and swimming and he looked forward to the annual Salvation Army Senior's trip each summer to Army Lake where he could spend the week fishing. Jim enjoyed growing tomatoes in his garden and harvesting his grapes to make grape juice each summer. He loved to travel and made many trips to Florida and Mexico to visit friends and play tennis and fish.
Jim was an avid tennis player and was a member of Western Racquet Club for many years. He continued to play league tennis until age 92 and enjoyed the camaraderie and social activities with his fellow players. Jim spent hours watching professional tennis on TV and knew all the players and even attended tournaments in California while visiting his daughter in the winter. Jim also regularly played volleyball at the Salvation Army and appreciated all his friendships there. One of Jim's favorite weekend activities was going to the Cup O Joy in Green Bay to listen to music and he was particularly fond of the bluegrass bands. Jim had a witty sense of humor and frequently referenced quotes from episodes of the TV show Seinfeld with his family. He will be greatly missed and remembered with love.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Barbara (John) Wagner, Oshkosh; sons, John (Beth) Hall, Neenah and David (Carol) Hall, Green Bay; nine grandchildren, Julie, Kathy, Laura, Jessica, David, Thomas, Jim, Katie and Bob and 17 great-grandchildren.
