Eugene J. (Gene) Knox, 85, Green Bay, died suddenly Saturday, June 16, 2007.

He was born March 8, 1922, in Green Bay, to Dr. Eugene and Patra (Peterson) Knox.

He graduated from West High School and attended the University of Wisconsin and St. Norbert College. During World War II, Gene served in the 96th Infantry Division, 382nd Regiment. He fought in the battle of Leyte and was later wounded at Okinawa. He was awarded a Purple Heart and also earned a Combat Infantry Badge. After the war, he attended Marquette University where he received his B.S. degree.

In 1950, he married Patricia DeVolder. They had four children who survive him, Michael (Carol) Knox, Winona, Minn.; Peter (Karen) Knox, Luxemburg; Kathryn (Philip) Schmidt, Neenah; and John (Karen) Knox, New Berlin. Patricia preceded him in death in 1961. In 1965, he married Rita LaPlant Roberts and Gene became a wonderful father to Jeannie Roberts (John Voegeli), Madison; John Roberts (Don Huisheere), Madison; Charles (Sharon) Roberts, Appleton. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, James Knox, Robert (Jean) Knox, all of California; and a sister, Patricia Miller, Florida. Gene was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Roberts, and a brother-in-law, Francis Miller.

Mr. Knox was a self-employed certified public accountant for many years. He retired in 1987. He had been a volunteer for the St. Vincent De Paul Society. He was a member of St. Bernard Parish and was also a member of the American Legion, Sullivan-Wallen Post #11. Gene was a longtime blood donor and had received his 10 gallon pin.

Friends may call at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 2040 Hillside Lane from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday (today). The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday (today) at the church with Rev. Rowland De Peaux, O. Praem., officiating. Burial will be in Fort Howard Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to benefit the St. Vincent De Paul Society and St. Bernard School.
