Dennis Aldon Schmidt was born to Albert M. and Maria "Mary" (Epp) Schmidt, April 17, 1931, on a farmstead approximately seven miles north-west of the town of Waldheim, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the second of five children born into this family. The children listed from oldest to youngest are Ellen Mae, Dennis Aldon, Robert Delmar, Dorothy Anne, and Marjorie Ruth.
Except for the fifth and sixth grades at Victoria School in St. Catharines, Ontario, he attended Springfield School, a one room rural schoolhouse north-west of Waldheim, through the ninth grade. He attended Huron High in Huron, South Dakota for the tenth grade and Prairie High, Three Hills, Alberta, Canada for the 11th and 12th grades, graduating in June of 1949. In 1953 he earned a bachelor's degree from Grace Bible Institute, Omaha, Nebraska, and in 1956 earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Omaha, with an emphasis in premedical studies. On August 2, 1958, he and Lorna Prochaska were married at the First Methodist Church in Lorna's hometown of Table Rock, Nebraska. In 1960 he earned a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, located in Omaha. The following year he completed a rotating internship at Immanuel Hospital, Omaha. During that time, their first son, Jeffrey, was born. During the next two years he served as a General Duty Medical officer in the United States Air Force, at the Greenville Air Force Base in Mississippi, where their younger son, Steven, was born. He was discharged as a Captain, Permanent Grade in 1961.
After his discharge from the Air Force, he completed his residency in radiology at St. Louis City Hospital, a St. Louis University sponsored program, passing the American Board of Radiology examinations in the areas of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology (radiation oncology), and nuclear medicine. His work was in the fields of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology, with the last half of his practice confined to radiation oncology. He was awarded the title of Fellow of the American College of Radiology, an honor conferred on less than 15% of members of the ACR. He found the practice of medicine most fulfilling, and he never had a day that he did not pursue work with keen anticipation. His philosophy, derived from the Word of God, was to strive to be a servant to all those surrounding him including patients, technical help, fellow physicians, and other personnel.
When a child and into his mid-teens his family attended the Krimmer Mennonite Brethren churches at the Salem Church north-west of Waldheim, Saskatchewan and Bethesda Church in Huron South, Dakota where his father, Albert was pastor for several years. At the age of 12, upon confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his Savor he was baptized by his uncle, Edwin T. Schmidt, in the rapidly flowing waters of the North Saskatchewan River and joined the nearby Salem Church. Throughout his life Dennis faithfully attended church wherever he lived, and in 1995 he and his wife Lorna became members of Covenant Presbyterian Church, St. Louis, Missouri, where he was also ordained to the office of ruling elder. His study of the Bible was a source of great joy and spiritual growth, resulting in an assurance of salvation in Christ Jesus.
Dennis and Lorna moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, in 2017, where they resided until their deaths, having been blessed with over sixty years of marriage. Dennis passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
Dennis is survived by his sisters, Dorothy and Marjorie; his sons, Jeffrey (Beth) and Steven (Katie); grandchildren, Sarah (Nathan) Rapp, Peter (Grayson) Schmidt, Nathan Schmidt, John (Rebecca) Schmidt, and Seth (Beth) Schmidt, children of Jeff and Beth Schmidt; as well as grandchildren, Matthew and Maura Schmidt, children of Steve and Katie Schmidt. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Jackson Rapp (Sarah and Nathan Rapp), and Lydia, Noah and Sally Schmidt (Peter and Grayson Schmidt).
