Betty Mae (Engebos) Baye passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at St. Mary's Hospital, Green Bay. Betty was born on October 2, 1931 to Emily (Kropp) and Gregory Engebos in Green Bay. She attended Annunciation Catholic School and graduated from St. Joseph Academy in 1949. She attended Holy Rosary College in Illinois. She met her husband, Don Baye, at a friend's wedding. They were soon engaged and married on November 18, 1950 at Annunciation Parish. They shared 66 years together before Don died in 2017.
Betty worked as a secretary at Greg Engebos & Sons and as a waitress in area restaurants. She went on to work as secretary of the Green Bay Women's Bowling Association and then became secretary/treasurer of the Wisconsin Women's Bowling Association until her retirement. She was inducted into the Green Bay Women's Bowling Association in 1998 and Wisconsin Women's Bowling Association in 1997. She and dad traveled extensively for bowling tournaments from Hawaii to Florida, to Caribbean cruises. They also traveled to Spain to visit their daughter and her family in the military. She collected spoons from her many travels.
Her hobbies included crocheting and she made many blankets for babies, weddings and other gifts for family and friends. She was a child at heart, collecting Beanie Babies, which have become playful memories for her many great-grandchildren. She enjoyed the many friendships she made throughout her bowling years. She liked to dance, sing, go to work (aka the casino), and support the Badgers, Brewers and the Packers.
Together Betty and Don raised four children. She had polio in 1955 when she was pregnant with her youngest child and had to learn how to walk again. She was able to yell for her children to come home from her front porch and they would hear her two blocks away. As the children grew, Betty was involved in Christian Mothers and sang in the St. Jude Parish choir. She worked many parish fundraisers throughout those years, teaching her children the gift of volunteering. She enjoyed family celebrations, including the annual Baye Booyahs at Shawano Lake and Christmas festivities at their home on Thrush Street in Green Bay.
After retirement, she and dad moved to their cottage on Shawano Lake for half of the year, while enjoying the winters in Sun City, Arizona the other half.
Mom and Dad moved back to Green Bay in 2016: Dad passed away on March 11, 2017. In 2022 Mom moved to Brookview Meadows in Howard. This was her home until her hospitalization on January 3, 2023.
Betty is survived by four children, Wayne (Barb) Baye, Howard; Diane Baumgart, Kaukauna; Donald Baye, Howard and David (Julie) Baye, Green Bay. She has eight grandchildren including Bryan Baye, Green Bay, Major Randal (Lori) Baumgart, Sparta; Gregory (Kathy) Baumgart, New London; Miranda Baumgart, Kaukauna; Rev. Matthew (Megan) Baye, DePere; Peter (Charista) Baye, Omaha, NB; Annie (Kaanan) Krueger, Green Bay and Rebecca (Ivan) Martinez, Omaha, NB. Step-great granddaughters, Cara, Cayla, and Christian.
