With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Bernice Mary Elliot, our beloved mother, grandmother and friend to all whose lives she touched. She left us peacefully, on Monday, February 6, 2023, with family by her side. Bernice was in her 98 th year, just a month shy of her 99 th birthday. She was born March 18, 1924, in Green Bay to Mathew and Stella (Mortell) Diederich.
Bernice was a graduate of Green Bay West High School, Class of 1942. She then attended St. Mary's School of Nursing, graduating in 1945. Bernice dedicated her life to being a caregiver not only to her family, but also as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital for over 25 years in the nursery.
While in nursing school, she met the love of her life, Warren Elliot, a handsome soldier who had eyes for no other since that fateful day. Married on June 17, 1946, at St. Patrick's Church, they spent the next 54 wonderful years loving each other and raising a large, beautiful family until his death in 2000.
Bernice was a cherished mother to her nine children, Suzanne De Steffen, Patty (Joey) Gehin, Jean Elliot, Linda (Jeff Mathias) Elliot, Mary Elliot, Jim (Diana) Elliot, Theresa (Jearold) Holland, Rob Elliot, Steve (Elisa) Elliot; proud grandmother of 15 grandchildren, Gina, Jon, Joel, Sarah, Sean, Katie, Micki, Matt, Sam, Molly, Bradley, Mackenzie, Lukas, Nathan, Andrew; 15 great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Ciana, Ariana, Noah, Ava, Ziya, Ruby Jo, Nolan, Shiloh, Pearson, Orlando, Kalen, Isaiah, Maya, Ursula; 7 great-great-grandchildren, Denahi, Amari, Kaiden, Kashton, Noah, Jordan, Kenai; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Deeply devoted to her faith, she lived a full and blessed life as the family matriarch. Bernice created so many wonderful memories with family gatherings and holidays that we will forever cherish, always serving others and forever giving more than she ever took. Her thoughtful care packages and scotcheroos warmed so many hearts and bellies. Bernice loved her family cottage vacations each summer and traveling with her husband. They were over the moon excited to have the opportunity to travel to Hawaii and American Samoa. Her only regret was not getting to Ireland. Reading and her love of books was passed on to many. She loved shrimp dinners, hot (not warm) coffee and late-night ice cream treats. Most of all she adored her family and instilled good values in her children and grandchildren that have served them well. She will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
Bernice was preceded in death by her dear husband, Warren; parents, Mathew and Stella Diederich; sisters, Esther Schumerth, Beulah Groose; son-in-law Dr. Dale De Steffen.
Friends and family will gather at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2771 Oakwood Dr. on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, with visitation from 9:30am-10:30am and Catholic Mass at 10:30am. celebrated by John Van Deuren, assisted by Sr. Marla Clercx A.N.G.
