Arthur J. Daley, 94, passed away Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, surrounded by his family. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Aug. 16, 1916, the son of Phillip and Mary (Mayer) Lunkenheimer. Art took his stepfather, John Daley's last name when he began his writing career. On June 7, 1941, he married Lorayne Mongan at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Oshkosh. They had 69 wonderful years together.
Art began his journalism career at The Fond du Lac Commonwealth Reporter as a "newsboy" and later as sports editor. He moved to Green Bay and joined the Press-Gazette in 1941, working under Ray Pagel in the Sports Department. During WWII, Art served with the Army's 42nd Infantry Division. He was Sports Editor of The Green Bay Press-Gazette from 1946 to 1968, and then worked as a wire editor until his retirement in 1979.
Mr. Daley was co-founder of the Green Bay Packer Yearbook. In 1993, he was inducted as a contributor into the Packer Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of the NFL Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Art was the 1976 recipient of the Dick McCann Memorial Award presented by the Professional Football Writers of America. From 1978 until his death, he was a regular contributor to The Packer Report. Mr. Daley was a charter member of St. Agnes Parish, a member of The Oneida Golf and Country Club, the Optimists and the U.S. Army 42nd Division reunion group. He enjoyed playing golf, traveling to Florida, attending Super Bowl games and visiting with family and friends. He truly relished the Packer victory in Super Bowl XLV.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Lorayne; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathy Daley, Green Bay; and a daughter, Kay Louise Borr, Virginia. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marie Parrott and Phyllis Grosse.
Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Friends may also call at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1484 Ninth St., from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Rev. Mark Falcone, O.Praem officiating. Entombment will be in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.
