Al was born on January 27th, 1947, in Green Bay the son of Bernice (Watermolen) and Milton "Lefty" Long. He graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1965. He went on to study biology and graduated from Ripon College in 1969.  On June 21, 1969 Al married Kathy Van in Green Bay where they lived and raised their daughters Jessica and Sara.

Al started as a teacher at Annunciation Catholic School and then moved on to a career in commercial interior sales and management until his retirement.

Al was active in athletics his whole life. He played many sports as a teenager and loved football. Al played a key role on two Midwest Conference Championship football teams during his career as a running back for Ripon College. He finished his college football career with the most rushing touchdowns in school history, a mark that stood for 25 years. He also graduated with the second-most rushing yards in school history and set a single season school record for touchdowns as a senior, a record that stood for 22 years. Al was inducted into the Ripon College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.  As an adult Al played AAA Fastpitch and loved to golf. In later years, Al loved to watch and cheer for his daughters, nieces and nephews, and grandchildren in their sporting events.

Al loved the outdoors and spent many days wading the streams trout fishing, walking the fields bird hunting, and loved to hunt deer both in Wisconsin and Canada. Hosting the guys at his cabin for deer hunting or his golf buddies for the GMO (Greater Mountain Open) was a yearly event. He loved to spend time on his 80 acres of land in Wausaukee walking, hunting, planting trees, and milling lumber.
