David A. Campbell Sr., age 80, of Green Bay passed in his sleep Thursday, October 12, 2017.
He was born on November 20, 1936 to the late William and Alyce (Shippey) Campbell in Green Bay, WI.
David was a graduate of Green Bay West High School, Class of 1954. He later attended college at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, served in the United States Army Reserves, and held part time jobs in construction before embarking on an adventure in television production. He worked briefly at WFRV before moving to WLUK, where his career spanned more than three decades. Dave's passion for architecture and design, coupled with his experience in construction later became apparent in the various television news sets he designed and constructed. Perhaps his greatest contribution was in the people he hired and nurtured in his role as Production Manager. Described by many as "the best boss I've ever had", David's legacy lives on in countless television news and production professionals who got their first break in the business working for him.
David was a loving and caring father, and was active with his kids when they were young. He loved being a "Grandpa" and especially cherished time spent with his grandkids. He accepted people from all walks of life, and really enjoyed just sitting and visiting with folks. David loved animals, especially tired old dogs, fat lazy cats, and owls. He found beauty in imperfection, and in old scrap pieces of wood. David saw the value of reclaiming discarded things. He enjoyed listening to all types of music and had a keen appreciation for art. He grew up spending summers at the family cottage on the shores of Green Bay, and later made it his year-round home. Long since removed, his wishes are to have his cremated remains scattered there.
David is survived by his children and their spouses; David and Connie Campbell, Kathleen Campbell, Jessica Campbell, Brianna and Robert Ploeckelmann; by his married grandchildren and their spouses, Jamie and Alex Brasil, Niki and Ryan Hensley; and by his younger grandchildren, Mackay, Jasmin, Jonathan, Anika, Jordan, Seth, and Ian.
He is also survived by his brothers and their spouses, Bill and Rosemary Campbell, Jim and Sandy Campbell; by his sister, Sue Ploeckelmann; and by his nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alyce Campbell; and by his brother-in-law, Bob Ploeckelmann.
Friends may call at the Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave, Green Bay, on Friday, October 20, 2017. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and will be followed by a brief service at 6:00 p.m. Online condolences may be sent to David's family at www.blaneyfuneralhome.com .
In lieu of floral expressions, a memorial fund has been established in David's name.
The family would like to express thanks to the staffs of St. Vincent Hospital, Grancare Nursing Center, and Unity Hospice for the care and support provided to David and his family.
