Thomas "Tom" Miller, Sr., 87, a longtime resident of Green Bay, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at a local nursing home. He was born May 22, 1918, in Milton, Penn., to James and Mary Miller. Mr. Miller served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. On Nov. 13, 1944, Tom was united in marriage to Beverly Rusch in Philadelphia, Penn.
Mr. Miller played professional football for five years, the last of them for the Packers in 1946. Previously, he had played end for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins. Following his retirement from the National Football League, he coached football, basketball and baseball in the college ranks at Wilkes and Drexel Colleges. Mr. Miller rejoined the Packers as publicity director in 1965, later serving as the assistant to the general manager under Vince Lombardi and later as business general manager before retiring as assistant to the president.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly, Green Bay; three children and their spouses, Thomas Jr. and Joyce Miller, Crivitz; Nancy and Ross Fuller, Winneconne; Sue Miller, De Pere; three step-grandchildren, John Begalke, Green Bay; Rachel Begalke, Morton, Miss.; Rebecca and Andre LeDuc, Eugene, Ore.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Robert Miller, Milton, Penn.; Lee (Irma) Miller, New Columbia, Penn.; Richard (Wanda) Miller, Harrisburg, Penn.; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
The family will receive friends at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday. A private funeral service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund has been established in the name of Thomas Miller, Sr. for Alzheimer's Association (Research), 225 N. Michigan Ave., 17th floor, Chicago, IL 60601.
