Bernard C. "Bernie" Phelps, 72, Green Bay, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2008. He was born Oct. 5, 1935, in Menominee, Mich., to George and Frieda Phelps. He grew up in Marinette and graduated in 1953 from Our Lady of Lourdes High School. In 1957, Bernie graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. On Feb. 22, 1975, he married Jane Bradley. Bernie was a C.P.A. for many years. He had been employed in Milwaukee and later was Controller and Manager of Northern Shoe in Pulaski. In 1980, he began his own private practice in Howard. In 1999, he sold his business to Kerber-Rose & Associates. In 2003, due to his illness, he retired.
He enjoyed watching the Packers, working in the yard and around his pool, spending time with his grandson, Shawn, traveling and road trips to the south the last few years.
Bernie was a member of the Board of Directors of County Rescue, the Howard Suamico Business and Professional Association, the Howard Suamico Education Foundation, an active member of St. John the Baptist community, and many accounting professional associations.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Jane; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Shannon Grassl, Mary and Paul Savoie; a grandson, Shawn Savoie; a sister, Mary Glyzewski; a brother, Ed Phelps; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jean and John Glysch, Ann and Jack Olsen, Mary and Roger Schmitz, Theresa and Paul Sorenson, Jim and Janet Bradley, Terry and Jean Bradley, Bob and Lee Bradley; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. A Parish Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. Friends may also call at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2597 Glendale Ave., Howard, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. John Bergstadt officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
