Viola “Vi” Elizabeth Gegare, 97, Green Bay, died peacefully Thursday, September 1, 2011. Vi was born March 29, 1914, in De Pere to the late Peter and Cecelia Leiterman. On August 19, 1939, she married Floyd Gegare at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in De Pere. Floyd preceded her in death on May 30, 2002.
Vi loved the outdoors and spending time at the family cabin in Lakewood. While “up north” she enjoyed fishing for perch and bluegills, and she especially liked picking wild berries and nuts. Vi was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed gardening, baking goodies, and needlecrafts. She was an avid football fan who enjoyed watching and wagering on the Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John and Lisa Gegare; two grandsons, Matthew and Eric Gegare, all of Green Bay. She is further survived by two sisters, Lillimae DeCleene, New Franken, and Catherine Tordeur, Green Bay; one brother, Gerald Leiterman, De Pere; one sister-in-law, Ann Leiterman, Green Bay; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Vi was preceded in death by her husband, seven sisters and brothers, Anamarie Frisque, Alice Marinan, Esther Tordeur, Barb Van Roy, Clarence Leiterman, Edwin Leiterman, and Marvin Leiterman.
Family and friends may call at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 936 Ninth St., from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Richard Getchel officiating. A luncheon will follow. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, De Pere.
